ABOUT
Ursula Wienken (*2001) is a german-polish bassist, composer and bandleader from Cologne. Both as an electric bassist and as a double bassist she plays in various projects, with a particular preference for rhythmical and danceable music.
Born and raised in Neuss, Germany, she picked up the acoustic guitar at the age of 7 and the electric bass at 9. shortly before starting her studies at the Hochschule Für Musik und Tanz in Cologne in 2020, she added the double bass to her repertoire. nowadays, ursula always plays the low tones, sometimes electric, sometimes acoustic, and most of all, fretless.
Ursula has already had the privilege to perform at renowned festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazzfest Bonn, Summerklaeng Festival in Cologne, Altenberger Kultursommer, Brasilionia in Cologne, Polychrom Jazzfestival in Osnabrück, and the JazzSommerNacht in Neuss.
Concerts and Tournees have brought her through Ecuador, the UK, Poland, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and many parts of Germany.
In 2022, she was awarded the Neusser Kunstförderpreis 2021 for her work as a young aspiring bassist and composer.
Her work has also been honoured by Dr. Werner Richard Dr. Carl Dörken Stiftung (with „SUMMIT“ 2023), the Young Münchener Jazzprize (Finalist with „SUMMIT“ 2023), the Cologne Jazzsupporters Composers Prize (Finalist 2023), as well as many others in a sidewoman context.
From 2022 to 2023, Ursula played as a bassist in the LaJazzO NRW.
Since 2023, she has been the bassist in the lineup for the Bundesjugendjazzorchester for 2023/24.
At the renowned HfMT Cologne, Ursula served as the student representative for the Jazz/Pop department from 2021 to 2023. In the course of this voluntary position, she had the opportunity to participate as a panel member in discussion rounds on the topic of gender inequality in music, including events organized by the Beginen Salon Köln e.V., as well as the Cité des Dames event series by the Equality Commission of HfMT Cologne.
